About The Course
There is a reason why Birdwatching is one of the most popular pastimes around the world. It provides enjoyment, exercise, relaxation, and companionship in the heart of nature while the Birdwatcher can expand his knowledge base and even contribute to science in a meaningful way. This course is probably the only course available that teaches a person the techniques and skills of birdwatching, elements that are seriously lacking in most other training. It also extensively covers the topics of bird anatomy, the wonder of flight and the intriguing habits of many bird species.
After the successful completion of the course the student will have selected a number of marker bird species to use as comparable for the correct identification of 200 of South Africa’s bird species. The different modules are explained in more detail at each separate module’s summary below. Assessment of students will include online tests and assignments. The student will receive a certificate after successful completion. This course will not only appeal to and fulfil the needs of established and new Birdwatchers, but would also be important for Game Rangers, Game Guides, Field Guides and Tour Guides to add valuable insight and knowledge to their existing knowledge portfolio’s.
The course developer is Herman van Niekerk, author of the best-selling and innovative bird guide, SAPPI Birds of South Africa with Callfinder. Students who are interested in this course, or their companions, may also be interested in the other nature courses, Butterflies and the Joy of Butterfly Spotting and Hiking Trail Design, Construction and Usage.
