About The Course
Butterflies are the jewels of nature and very important indicators of the well-being of the environment. Yet they move around unobtrusively or sit still and hidden with folded wings. One would scarcely believe that there are 660 different species and many subspecies in South Africa! It requires effort from a butterfly spotter to find and identify butterflies, and even more so their caterpillars or larvae.
This course introduces students to the wonderful world and micro-cosmos of butterflies in all 4 its life cycle stages - egg, larvae, pupae and imago. Butterfly spotting as a pastime compliment birdwatching and the two can be done together, hand in hand, at the same premises or site. In fact, the larvae of butterflies comprise the major food source of birds, confirming the linkage. This course will not only appeal to butterfly enthusiasts, but would also be important for Game Rangers, Game Guides, Field Guides and Tour Guides to add valuable insight and knowledge to their existing knowledge portfolio’s.
