The student is firstly made aware of the unconditional rule that a hiking trail may not intrude in or change nature, but must add to it, and signs off on an environmental pledge to honour this philosophy. The different important trail standards are learnt, including trail, or clearing height, walking or tread width, clearing width and length. The detailed planning of a hiking trail is discussed and follows a logical, 4-step surveying and research process. The student will learn how to physically construct a trail by using a varied range of trail structures such as corduroys, bridges, suspension bridges, cuttings, retaining walls, culverts, and dips, amongst many others. A very interesting section of the course provides images of simple trail “furniture” and structures that can be made from material locally available. These items include benches, chairs, tables, toilets, cabins, and others. No trail can be successful without proper and adequate signage, to which a section of the Course is devoted, while safety at and marketing of a hiking trail is also included as part of this course.
